“I am happy to be here, and I want kids to be happy to be here,” announced Sheena Fletcher, the new high school principal. “I believe that light needs to be shown on all students and all kids need to be celebrated, she said, adding “I also believe in meeting students where they are and taking them where they need to go.”
Along with putting energy into supporting all students, Fletcher hopes to bring “consistency, excitement, and joy” to the senior academy, such as hopefully starting an annual EWA Talent Show and a Poetry Slam.
Fletcher has 11 years of administrator experience. Before that, she was a teacher for nine years. She has taught American History, African American Studies, Civics and Economics, and World History.
“When I first started being an administrator, I was tough, I was a bulldog,” she said. However, over the years, she feels she has grown as an administrator by learning to slow down the process and make sure students are heard. Although she was a “bulldog,” when she first became an administrator, she swore she would never be an administrator who “sat in the ivory tower,” meaning she would not ask her staff to do something that she wouldn’t do. As a parent herself Fletcher, also thinks that as an administrator, it is important to communicate with parents, even to celebrate the students.
When communicating with parents and students through email, Fletcher signs off with the saying “with grace and grit.” To her, this means “treating people with dignity” and being hard working. Mrs. Fletcher believes that someone could be the smartest person in the room, but the hardest working person is the one who will make a difference. “With Grace and Grit” originated when she was thinking about a quick saying to “sum up” who she is.
